Community Radio Pollikontho 99.2, from the North–East part of Bangladesh received the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Award on Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction on 10 May 2017 at a Gala Award Ceremony during the ABU Media Summit on Climate Change and DRR, 10-12 May 2017, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) actively works to improve recognition of the community electronic media sector [Community Radio, Community TV, Community Film] & its work in and involvement with the communities it seeks to serve from 2000 with support from Free Press Unlimited.
Ms. Ankhi Palit, the producer of Community Radio Pollikontho 99.2 received the best radio feature international award in the category of “Disaster Risk Reduction” in a competition for the broadcasters organized by Asia – Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU).
The award was given in recognition of the best production and presentation of a community radio feature titled: “Follow Earthquake Practices and self yourself.” Ankhi Palit produced the program following a radio script prepared by Mr. Biplob Kanti Dev, another producer of Radio Pollikontho.
Mr. Martuza Ahmed Hon’ble Secretary of the Ministry of Information handed over the prize to Ankhi Palit on 10 May, 2017 at a Gala night held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).
H E Hasanul Haq Inu MP, Hon’ble Minister for Ministry of Information, & Dr. Javed Mottagi, Secretary General, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and all participants of 3rd ABU Media Summit were present during the Gala Awards Ceremony.
The program was organized on the occasion of 3rd ABU Media Summit in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 10-12 May. The Summit was organized with the objectives to highlight the Asia –Pacific best practices, skills and lessons learnt in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptations.
Radio Pollikontho is the only recipient of this award from Bangladesh. It can be mentioned that Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar jointly co-organized the 3rd ABU Media Summit on Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction.
The Awards encourage inspiring story telling from across the globe about the biggest challenge to the mankind and solutions to this global threat. This is annual competition honours the best Radio and Television program on climate change adaptation, disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction. The competition has two radio and two television categories and two special awards.
